Welcome to our blog! As we discussed, i've set this up as a regular forum for us to explore and discuss community media. I'm not a queen of blogspot, so this first post (and your response) is a test to see if we can all access it and use it. We can see how this goes for a few months and, if we don't have the juice for it, try something else.
So chime in on our first topic: what is our mission? what do we want out of this group/experience? Hopes and needs?
Also, below is an outline of our current scheme so we have it archived!
I'm not totally sure how to set it up so that you all get an email reminder when someone has added an idea. Whoever figures this out first let the rest of us know!
Yahoo!
Idea Exchange
- Regular, but informal series of exchanges amongst us to develop ideas
- Blogs to archive dialogue and post work (initially private; later public & linked to our sites)
- Quarterly skype conferences to see each other and actually talk
- Initial questions to explore: 1) what is our mission? 2) what is community media, 3) com media best practices
- Later questions: what are criteria for community media? what are different ways to build/judge a community media aesthetic
Collaborative Writing & Research
- Journal of Aesthetics & Protest
- Squealer spring/summer 2011 edition focus on community media
- Resource list (books, urls, projects, etc on community media)
Face to Face Encounters/Residencies
- Idea here is that we create ways to actually spend 2-3 days together; on our own dime or with funding somehow
- One time in Buffalo; the other in Philly (note: i an get to buffalo in the summer; my folks are now not far from there)
- Set them up as "residencies" & put on our CV' and raise funds for (Com media residency w/ Scribe or Squeaky Wheel)
- Host organization (Scribe/Squeaky) finds a way to raise/allocate some fund for food or crash pad
- Will allow us to gather and explore/work to polish articles, presentations, share work, etc
Presentations
- Visible Evidence 2010
- NAMAC 2011
What is our mission? A critical dialogue regarding community media aesthetics is necessary. Through this conversation I would hope to gain clarity and focus in my ongoing involvement in this vital field. I've been reading some of those texts I found on the subject. The spectrum of stories seem to defy gravity! The powerful communication tools for the art of self expression can also be a weapon in many battles yet to fight. The better we know it, the better our chances of survival. The means and the message can be beautiful. What are the criteria? Education. Participation. Style.
